A Legacy in Hearth and Home: On Fire! Celebrates 60 Years of Keeping Sonoma County Warm

While styles in home décor have shifted from classic mid-century to farmhouse chic and back again, one thing has remained constant: the warm glow provided by On Fire. This year, the local landmark officially celebrates its 60th anniversary, marking six decades of excellence in the fireplace and hearth industry. Founded in 1966 by Jule and Mary McMullen, On Fire began as Hearth and Color Shop, a small storefront dedicated to quality craftsmanship and personalized service. Today, that legacy continues under the leadership of their daughter, Eleanor Butchart, who took the reins in 1980 to guide the family business into a new era.

Generations of Warmth For Eleanor, the showroom wasn’t just a shop; it was the backdrop of her childhood. “I grew up watching my parents build this business from a fireplace accessories, wallpaper, and paint store at a time of rapid growth in surrounding neighborhoods like St. Francis Acres and Oakmont, at their first store in the St. Francis shopping center,” says Eleanor. Wallpaper and paint have long since been replaced by gas, electric, and wood stoves and fireplaces, outdoor grills, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and outdoor furniture and umbrellas. “To reach sixty years is part of a legacy of the relationships my parents built with our neighbors. The journey through those 60 years is also a testament to our knowledgeable, talented, and friendly staff—two of whom have been with the company for over 30 years each.

In March of 2026, On Fire was honored as Best Fireplace and Woodstove Shop in the North Bay by the Bohemian.

Commemorating 60 Years. To celebrate this Diamond Anniversary, On Fire will be hosting a series of sales and promotions throughout the year • The “60th anniversary” sale will have exclusive discounts on premium inserts, stoves, outdoor kitchens, and furniture.
